Description

Mariner’s Compass Throw Quilt

This Mariner’s Compass Throw quilt is made of different shades of purple, using the traditional pattern of a compass.  This type of quilt is perfect for a cold winter evening by the fire. It can also be used as a wall hanging if one desires. Our quilts here at Family Farm are know for quality and uniformity of stitching. The quilts are hand quilted by one local Amish woman to ensure uniform stitches. Our goal is to preserve the traditional quilted look and to sell quality quilts that will be sure to add a warm cozy spirit to any room.

This throw blanket, like all the quilts at Family Farm quilts, is handmade. The fabrics are chosen first, then cut and sewn according to the design. The piece of fabric chosen for the back coordinates with the decorative top’s colors. A layer of polyester batting fits between the top and bottom layers. Over fifty yards of hand-quilting secure all three layers together to create a comfortable throw blanket.

For best washing results, follow these instructions carefully.

  • Machine wash with cold water on gentle cycle.

  • Use mild detergent, such as liquid Cheer for colors (No bleach or bleach alternatives. No Woolite or fabric softener.) For the first washing, add 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 tablespoons of salt in addition to the detergent. This home remedy prevents bleed and helps to set the colors in your quilt.

  • Remove quilt as soon as washer stops to minimize wrinkles and color-bleeding.

  • Never put quilt into the dryer! Line dry on a breezy day.

  • Quilts can be dry-cleaned at your own risk, but we definitely recommend washing.

    Quilt Trivia

Family Farm Quilts employs nearly 200 Amish and Mennonite ladies to make quilts for our store.

Each step of the quilt-making process requires a specific woman’s expertise. Each of our ladies specializes in either piecing or quilting. Therefore, at least two ladies are involved in making each quilt. The women who sew the tops together specialize in piecing certain quilt patterns. Since each quilter’s stitches vary, only one lady does the quilting per quilt. This system allows each woman to become an expert in her field.
